I planned to have step1 done before the year of 2006. Hope that this journal will help to keep me on the track. My aim is to go over the books before Oct. and leave 2 months for practical questions. Theoretically, 80pages/day of pure reading should have the job done. Let's see. smiling face

Reviewed 60pages of Neuroanatomy and listened 2hrs of the Webpre lecture.

  #3

Gosh, is this really my so called '2nd' round reading? Why those neuroanatomy stuffs look so 'fresh' to me? Still have 50pages to go tomorrow.

Went over the leftover of neuroanatomy and read through the part in FA. Not sure how long it will stay in my brain this time wink

  #6

Hei, I have the part for Histology, Early embryology and 1/3 of gross anatomy done. smiling face

  #7

I had another 1/3 of gross anatomy done today. Also listened to 2 webpre lectures. Personally, I think these lectures are great. They make the key point clearer and provide extra points which are frequently tested but somehow missed in the notes. I never tried the over 20CD kaplan lectures. They may work even better but sure take much more time, which I can't afford.
BTW, kind of slow but just realized that GL=good luck. Thanks Drworm grin

I decided to have one more day for Anatomy after trying Qs. Although people are saying that it's not a heavily tested subject in the real exam, I still want to have a solid understanding of it since its the 'base' for other subjects.

HI step1

Also in the same boat smiling face... planning to take the s1 in DEC 05. Started with anatomy . It's taking a LOT more time than i anticipated sad Did 2/3rd neuro from HY. Have completed histo from kaplan & FA and a few chapters from HY. Now going thru embryo...hope I'll finish it today. How about u? Which books are u using?

I guess u r right about the solid understanding u know. And i found some ppl saying anatomy and pathology are tested quite well in the exam...specially histopathology.

So..good luck & keep the high spirit up !!

Cheers

Hi Twinkle,

Thanks! I am using HY for neuroanatomy, Kaplan for histology and gross anatomy. Kaplan is very concise but it's missing many details for this part. I dont' have HY for gross anatomy so that I am not sure how good that book is. My impression is that, even if we master Kaplan well, we are just prepared for 60-70% in anatomy. Whether this will hit our final performance in the real exam or not depends on our luck. If the subject is not thoroughly tested, it's just our luck.~~~

Started Microbiology from July26. Will try to have it done in 12 days. I didn't read 'mycology & parasitology' in my so called 1st round reading. I will finish up these two parts first, in case that my patience is used up near the end of it---already happened several times before. rolling eyes

Repeat, repeat and repeat!!! After flipping over the chapters about Bacteria in Lange, I could tell by myself that these stuffs were not going to stay for long. Not surprisely, the Qs in Lange was a heavy hit. I slowed down the progress and went through FA, Webpre and the Lange book itself carefully. Now, I can go on with Virus with peace in mind---not sure how long it's going to stay that way though.

Lange has been complained for its 'dry' style, especially compared to the 'rediculous simply series'. I am reading the Lange for Microbiology and I know how painful it can be. At the very beginning, I hated it so much that I almost gave it up and planned to buy another book. After I got myself calm down, I asked the Q---would another book help if the knowledge itself has fainted away? No, I don't think so. It was painful because I was basically self-teaching myself of this boring subject. No teacher's voice, pictures and classmates' company to stimulate my brain during the process. Maybe a text book style one is THE right thing for me. To be fair with the book, I think it's a very good one. I like its concise style, emphasis of important organisms, pearls and Qs. The only thing I am not satisfied is that it didn't provide enough pictures about 'lab-diagnosis'. Color of the colones, changing of the agar et. al. will be much more helpful than the tedious "-" or "+". Fortunately, Webpre made up that part for me well.

from where can i get the 20cdof kaplan's lectures? i had few lectures in few cds, and i think that they are great

  #17

Hi dr_kempes, what I am using is the 'webprep' lectures. It's different from the 20CDs series. I thus don't have personal experiences about it but my friend bought her set from Ebay for around $150. Maybe you can find it there. Good luck!

Hi! I'm also planning to take Step 1 between Oct-Dec.I'm hoping to be ready by Oct though. Can I join your group since we are in the same boat?I'm on my first reading with Kaplan books and FA. I've taken the test before n did not passsad So I hope I can beat this exam the second time around. So far, I've done Patho (Goljan & FA), Kaplan for Biochem, Physio, Behav Sci and currently doing Pharm. Will do Anatomy then Micro/Immuno after and hopefully start my 2nd before August ends. Good luck!

  #19

Hey DrMary,

Welcome to joining us! Let's have it done before Christmas.

I've finished Microbiology, 2nd round. I planned to go through Pharmacology after it but the thick book looked scaring. To comfort myself. I decided to go with Biochemistry first.

  #20

Had 80p of Kaplan Biochemistry done. Relieved~~~ time for bed

  #21

So far, Biochemistry is the only subject which looked easier in the 2nd round than it was before. I can have over 70/p done everyday and some time left for Qs. In my 2001 Kaplan, there are totally 370pages for Bioch. I've started to dream of finishing it up by next Wed..

BTW, since most of you guys are using the newer edition, would you mind to let me know how many pages are there in your Kaplan book for Biochemistry? I am always wondering how different it can be--assuming that the books are arranged in samilar styles.

  #22

Well, the past 3 weekends were used for other things. My progress is thus 6 days behind the plan. After sitting in the library for another 10h today, I can finally let Biochemistry go for its 2nd round. The good thing is that this time, I got about 75% Qbook Qs correct. It's not super, compared to my friends' over 90%, but still encouraging to me. Ok, here comes Pharmacology from tomorrow till mid-Sept..

  #23

Pharmacology is hard to me. To all those who had their medical education in languages other than English and passed USMLE, I admire your intelligence, heartly! I can only manage to cover 3-4 chapters/day of the Lange Pharm book. It's going to take more than 15 days to have it covered.

  #24

CNS--nightmare! The good thing is that it's finally done. Tomorrow is another day,ha.

  #25

hi step1

i m also taking in dec..you doing great.Keep going. LANGE pharma takes more than 10 days..and it''s well explained topics.

GOOD LUCK
