39 yr old divorced Hispanic woman presents with lethargy fatigue. When questioned, c/o diffuse physical aches although health appears good. She confesses that she finds herself “crying for no reason”. She reports not really feeling like seeing any of her usual friends and has difficulty sleeping, especially waking up early in morn’. She’s given a prelim diag of unipolar depression. In addition to this diagnosis, the strongest risk factor for suicide in this patient <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> a) Age b) Gender c) Marital status d) Overall health e) Visit to physician f) Fatigue Answer given is marital status…which can be true as divorced/separated/widowed are @ higher risk. I can buy that. What I cannot understand is: in Kaplan its given that about 80% of suicide cases, people give some kind of hint (80% seen physician in past 6 months, 50% in past month) Why can’t “E” be the answer? Any explanations anyone? Thanks and yeah..i am definitely going towards repression lol

By itself visit to physician doesn't increase the risk of suicide and there could be another group of people which wisits physicians even more often, for example, over 80 years.

A visit to a physician means pt. needs help so his/her mind is still clear. Going back to your question. statement mentioned about the pt's current marital status (divorced)
