im writing this in response to a previous thread ...i wanted to make sure that as many ppl, read this as possible so i didnt write this in a reply..
i was taking my Step 1 exam on the 14th of april when there was a power failure...i was almost at the end of my 3rd block and i felt that id done well thus far...30mins later the power came back on and everyones computers restarted excpet for mine...after trying for abt 2hrs and contacting the reginal headquarters in maylasia...the prometric staff told me there was nothing i cud do and i had to forfeit that exam,...
as u can imagine it was THE most horrifying experience...to be totally ready to take the xema and have something so capricious happen...i contacted the ECFMG and they told me it cud take anywhere from 3-6weeks...becoz the NBME wud have to clear ouyt my file and send me another orange slip
that was the worst part of this entire ordeal..not knowing when id be able to take my exam...i still feel that had i been given a definite date then it wudnt have been as bad...
after calling them 2-3 times a week (very expensive in a country like pakistan) for 3 weeks and faxing and having friend who were in the US call the NBME i finally got my orange slip exactly 3 weeks to the day...my eleigibilty period had been extended
since i had been very depressed during that entire period i hadnt been able to study but i resched my exam 3 weeks later... i ended up getting a 99 but it cud jsut as easily have been a 92...
1 week before my exam the same thing happend to another classmate of mine
prometric blames the NBME and they blame prometric...
i blame prometric...after all we're paying a lot of money for these exams...esp in a country like Pakistan where the excahnge rate makes it even more...and if despite all that prometric cannot fulfill its primary responsiblity of administering the exam...the maybe we shud just revert back to the pencil paper format...and avoid this hassle in the future
