Salmonella is the most common in pt's with sickle cell dz.

Well, as far as i know from CMDT, first aid for step2, emergency medicine, boards and wards, it is a Salmonella.

hi,
sicklers are predisposed to infection by capsulated organisms coz of reduced spleen function a result of slpenic infarcts...autosplenectomy occurs on av... 8 to 9 years..... Also due to intestinal crisis possible intestinal infarcts, they end up with loads of salmonella which would otherwise remain intestinal
answer..they tend to get lots of salmonella which other people will not readily get, but that doesnt mean they cant get staph aureus....

for usmle purpose...they don't give both options at a time......
and even if they do .......select salmonella as your answer........since it's the latest reports bout salmonella being more common than staph....
this was comfirmed by me in my step-1 live kaplan lectures with Dr. Goljan.....and he said salmonella is more common that staph......though it used to be staph before few years....
Dr. Goljan said that he confirmed the information officially with nih.....
