First tell the patient that you are going to lift up sheet and inspect his knees. _ start from the opposite knee away from pain. Inspect ( " Let me take a good look") both knees one after the other. Palpate the area of pain. Do not forget to show empathy( you can see that it is painful and you are going to be as gentle as possible). Check for any edema ( you should say it so SP knows you looked for it ( " OK, let see now if there is any swelling"), warmth, redness. You do everything B/L Then check ROM; neurologic status for lower extr.( muscle strength, reflexes, sensation);pulses. Special points: check anterior/ posterior drawer signs and... shame on me I forgot the name (Mc...something) when you twist leg gently to check for menisck injury. Do not forget to cover legs with sheet again after you are done. Good luck. Then you have kind of take a quick look at ankles because they are close to pathology site. Of anything I would skip sensation because it is sooo time consuming. But if you have time-- do it. Good luck.
