A nurse gets stuck with a needle while attending a HIV pt, what will u do next in terms of prophylaxis?

  #2

-clean the wound
-update hep b/ tetanus if needed
-combivir (lamivudine+zidovudine) for 4 weeks, if high risk of transmission - add protease inhibitor.

that's for prophylaxis, also some labs done before starting drugs (baseline hiv, hep b&c, cbc, renal and liver function tests as well as stat pregnancy test on female)

and on the source - hep b, c, and hiv.

yes grin :x
basically i wanted u to say that triple therapy regimen for 4 wks

  #4

SOME BOOKS MENTION ONLY ZIDOVUDINE FOR 4 WKS -WHAT DO YOU SAY GUYS

  #5

you're right AZT alone is said to reduce the risk but one thing to consider is the Magnitude of the injury( i.e. Depth, presence of blood on the needle, location, etc) if too deep and too seriously injured i think we should go for the triple therapy

I agree wth Yulia ! very well said answer

well i studied that in the Public Health.
i think there is a big nasty Classification for this situation as to depth, etc.
