I just overheard/read from a different message forum that J1 visa doesn't require you to pay taxes in the USA... while H1B, one should pay taxes.. is there some truth to this?

I'm not familiar with reading the tax treaties... but for those who already filed for their J1s and H1bs.. I hope I can get some answers.. thanks you so much

With a J1 visa you won't have to pay Social Security taxes, but you will pay local, state and federal taxes. With the H1b visas, you will pay all taxes because it's assumed you will stay in the country.

thanks so much BBB for that quick reply... But may I ask again? So is there a big difference with paying the Social Security Taxes? thanks again!

Social Security has to do with the money that you will receive back when you retire. Since you won't be working here long enough to retire, you aren't expected to pay itnod
