I posted this somewhere else but figure it is time for a fresh start!

Dear All

To tell you about me: I am an IMG from a first-world, English-speaking country. I came here to do research at a world-renowned cancer hospital. I have publications, 2 years of research, letters from some of the top surgeons in the US, and ECFMG certifacation. They are sponsoring me onto an H1B visa currently.

Three questions:
1) Does anyone know how hard surgery is going to be to get into?
2) Do I need Step III for an H1B since I will be applying for an intern post?
3) Is it hard to find a hospital who will employ a resident on an H1B (I beleive they forfeit govt funding for my salary if they do?)?

I am sure I am not the only stressed person in this forum. To those others who are: you are not alone!

Thanks to anyone who can help...

Surgery isn't going to be easy - it's highly competetive.
2) Do I need Step III for an H1B since I will be applying for an intern post?

You have to have step three results in your hand to apply for an H1B visa. But since the cap was dropped from 195,000 to 65,000 think really hard about the possibility of starting on a J-1 visa. It's going to be really, really, hard to get an H visa.

3) Is it hard to find a hospital who will employ a resident on an H1B (I beleive they forfeit govt funding for my salary if they do?)?

Hospitals don't loose funding for H1B visas - if they did, no one would take them.

Thanks you.

I should already have an H1 - I work for a large hospital in New York and they have applied for me. If I have it, will a residency program happily take over sponsorship of it, or are they likely to ask me to change back to J?

If you already have the H, then you should be okay. Renewals are not included in the cap numbers.....
