Dimeric IgA with J chain binds to the poly-Ig receptor on the basolateral surface of epithelial cell and is transcytosed to the apical surface. Here poly-Ig receptor is cleaved, fragment of it under the name of secretory component releases bound with IgA and protects it from proteolytic cleavage.
