When cleansing the skin with alcohol and then iodine for the collection of a blood culture, the iodine (or iodophor) should remain intact on the skin for at least: a. 10 seconds b. 30 seconds c. 60 seconds d. 5 minutes

C is correct. From my answer key: "The iodine should remain on the skin for 1 minute because instant antisepsis does not occur when cleansing the skin for a blood culture." Many hospitals now have a kit that includes a scrubber sponge for the arm. I don't know what the commercial name for this is. It is more expensive than alcohol preps and iodine ampules, but the cost of these pays off in the higher reduction in contaminated blood cultures. If you are drawing blood cultures, please use these kits if they are available. An extra minute in scrubbing can literally save thousands of dollars to the patient and the hospital.
