A patient at 12 weeks gestation comes in with complains of abdominal pain. A UTZ was shown that revealed an empty gestational sac. the HCG was 6,000. What is the diagnosis?

Has anyone heard of heterotropic pregnancy?

I think itīs an ectopic pregnancy. The hCG would be very high in a mole (>100,000). And an heterotopic pregnancy is when there are an intrauterine pregnancy and an ectopic pregnancy.

Can I ask why isn't it an abortion? And What HCG level correlates with abortion?

If the gestational sac is empty, there isnīt an intrauterine pregnancy = no abortion, the question doesnīt say nothing about a bleeding (incomplete or complete abortion).

I d go for Ectopic.. low HCG ... and no IUP.. although at that GA and HCG one would not see much on TA US...IV US would be necessary.
