Hello Everybody,
I am an IMG, currently permanent resident in Canada, trying to get a US residency. I already passed Step 1, registred this year for Step 2 CK and CS.
But I just got a "hard hit" finding out that I might need to take the Canadian Evaluating Examination in order to get the Statement of Need from the Canadian authorities . The Statement of Need is a declaration issued by Health Canada in which they say that they are in shortage of the specialty I would like to persue in the US and that they need doctors specialized in that certain area. The Statement of Need is necessary for obtaining the J-1 visa.
At least this is what I found out. And I am very suprised, because I figured that I do not need to pass a Canadian Exam in order to apply for a US residency.
Please, if anybody knows more about this, I would be gratefull if
you would reply to me. If anybody knows if this is true or not, if anybody knows about shortcuts or any new information about this you are welcome to repply.

Optional question:
I found out about a
Kaplan free event that was held yesterday in Toronto about getting the visas for US. If anybody could provide me some notes about the meeting , it would mean a lot to me.
thank you. All the best with your studies.

yes you need to pass MCCEE to be eligible for statement of need in case you are a Canadian PR. In case you go for H1 than you dont need to. I was in the same boat. I took MCCEE just to be on the safe side as i finally managed to get a H1 position.

Hey nonstopdoc,

Is it totaly impossible to be eligible for a J 1 visa without passing the mccee and getting the statement of need??? I am really shocked!! I am a permanent resident of Canada too and I am aiming for the 2006 us match. I have already taken the usmle stepck and I will be done with my step 1 and cs in the next 2 monthes. So is that a must that I take the Mccee If I am going to think of a J 1-visa?? And when should I have my mccee results to get the statement of need letter at hand for 2006 match. And how easy is it to get an H visa?? Please please nonstopdoc I really need a clarification on this. Because my medical school didn't make my degree ready yet and I applied for the USMLE with a dean's letter which I don't have with me know. Do you think I will be able to make it if I take the mccee by december 2005?

thankyou in advance!

Yes you have to pass MCCEE in order to be eligible for J1. Theres no other way that i know. Incase you go for H1 you wot need the statement. Also you have to PASS MCCEE and not just attempt it. You can take tjhe exam after taking all of ur USMLEs. I took it in january. All you need is a pass result at the time of match so that you can apply for statement in case you end up with a J1 position. MCCEE is given only on specific dates unlike USMLE which is an year round affair. I guess they give it three times per year.

Regarding the specific eligibilty requiremnts for MCCEE check out www.mcc.ca.

Well i cant say that getting a H1 is easy or hard as you have to get a residency first and if you manage to get one in a hospital that sponsors H1 than you are good to go but compared to J1, its harder.

Thankyou sooo much nonstopdoc!

Is the MCCEE hard an exam or is it like the usmle?? I have 99 in step2 USMLE and I am doing good in step 1 prepation too. Do you think I will pass the MCCEE easily given the fact that I was studying for the USMLE?? I checked the MCCEE site and there is no spot for 2005.But if I can take it in january, I think I will be fine.

Thankyou again!
