Hi Everyone,

I Need some help here, i planned to take cs in july and the chances of getting the result are 50-50 by september 1st.as the results for CS usually takes 6-8 wks.

now does it effect my application . as i just have only step-1 score and waiting for step-2 score which i wrote on june 2nd. i saw in some posts on this forum that once we send the applications ,the colleges decide on their 1st look at the application. l

Is it correct

even if we update the application with results , the colleges dont bother them .

guys plz help me, as i will try to prepone my CS so that i get ecfmg certification by sept 1st to participate in the match.

Hi,

from what I have experienced, your chances of getting into residency will increase with good step 1 and step 2 scores (IMG's with step 3 scores will be given preference), besides publications/reseach experience on your resume. If you have a good step 2 score (which is given more importance than step 1 score), then you could postpone the CS.

I had applied with just the step 1 score, my step 2 score was updated later. I got plenty of rejections with just the step 1 score. Thankfully some of the hospitals had not picked up my documents from ERAS before the update and when they did pick it up, they got it with the step 2 score. I had not taken CS either. My scores were 86/93...got just 5 interviews.

If possible, take CS in July as planned....never hurts to have passed more exams smiling face You still have a month for preparation, you should be fine.

Good luck!

Hi ,

Thanks shaman, just out of curiosity - did u get residency. becoz my step-1 score is not so incredible , i am just hoping for a better score in step-2 .

regarding step-3 , however i cant complete it by september.will the colleges prefer us if we complete the step-3 by the time of interviews.

ALL THE BEST

Hi,

I did get into IM residency program (community based but with higher chances of getting a decent fellowship)....I guess I did well in the interviews. They had told me that I would have to pass step 3 and get an H-1 visa before the orientation day...they did'nt want students to start on an OPT. I took step 3 very late (in May)...got just 15 days to study....and passed the exam (with a terrible score-but scores were not my priority...getting an H-1 was)! I took a big risk! One of my co-residents also had to take the exam but sadly he could not clear it....now his residency has been delayed by 6 months.

I think, for IMG's, getting into residency is becoming tougher by the day. IMG's are frequently asked about when they plan to take step 3. Don't worry if you can't take it by September, when you go for the interviews, mention that you plan to take step 3 sometime soon.

Most programs that I wanted to apply to had conditions like-you should pass step 3 before February/ before orientation etc. In case you don't want to take step 3, you'll have to do additional research on whether they want you to take step 3 before joining. This is if you are an IMG. I don't think all this applies to an American graduate. You'll have to ask an American graduate for his/her experience.

Hope this helps. Don't worry about your step 1 score. The faculty members that interviewd me told me that they mainly look at step 2 scores and US clinical experience...They get an idea of how good your clincal skills are from this (can't blame them-they have'nt personally seen any of us work in the clinic).

This is just a suggestion-you can apply for step 3 for the period of Oct-Dec and mention that in your ERAS Application which you submit in September. Atleast step 3 will figure in your application....like i said....does'nt hurt to take or atleast intend to take more exams. smiling face

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi Shaman,

Thanks a lot, ur post has given me more info. i will try some observership and then mention in app that i will take step-3 shortly.well i am an IMG graduated in 03.one more question shaman, we do observership to mention in application that we have USCS right. but i have few friends who did observership and did not get the LOR - so my point is can we mention in the application that we did observership even though we dont have the LOR.

CONGRATULATIONS for ur getting residency. i am praying for a good score in step-2.

enjoy -bye

Hi,

Yes, observership will translate to atleast some US clinical experience. Try to get atleast two LOR's from physicians in US-it helps a lot. I don't think it is necessary for you to get LOR's from the physicians you do your observership with-any other US based physician who has seen your work ethic/communication skills etc can comment on the qualities he/she has observed in you. Some physicians may not be comfortable giving LOR's without actuallt seeing you work-so that should not make such abig difference. That's what I think.

Good luck with the step 2 score. smiling face

By the way, you'll have to check whether you can just mention that you are taking step 3 shortly or you have to give a date in the application form.

Your timeline looks goood. Last year CS results were excessively delayed for some and still people managed to find spots, I dont think you'll have any probs.

good luck
