Hi, I am an Img who recently passed step 1 with a score of 233/94 and am taking my Cs in july and Ck in september.I came to US last year and since then have been at home.I dont have a work permit yet hence couldnt get any clinical posts.I wasnt intersted in doing observership as lot of universities have explicitly mentioned in their websites that observerships will not be counted. I read people mentioning everywhere about they doing some kind of an observership just to fill in their CV .my question is that does it hurt your application if you spent more than an year at home doing nothing? Is it better to have good USMLe scores or have a CV with observerships(risking your scores coz you'll have to spend the entire day in the hospital observing patients). Also, how to get LOR if observership is not counted? Somebody please help!!! Thanks, jedi

well i was in the same boat. spent almost a year doing nothing but studying and taking exams. Same dilemma to study and take exam or waste time in hunting and doing observerships thro connections etc. Also as i was in canada, going for an observership would have meant moving to us for a month or two which is very difficult, costly and risky (due to visa rules). finally decided to skip observership all together and concentrate on exams. took exams with minimum possible gaps( all 5 exams(1 canadian) in exact 1 year). succeded in meeting all deadlines, attended all interviews and also managed to get good scores. Luckily, i got a good position. so bottom line is if you can get a observership and you have time to do that than go ahead but dont screw up your exams for that if you think it might affect your perfromance. Observerships may or may not add something to your app but if scores arent good, your app wont even pass the initial triage.
