just wonderting if anyone can help to tell me what energy systems are used: at rest, during 6 x 400m sprints (60sec each), and during 60s recovery between each sprint effort? thanks

First of all, there are tissues which always use glucose (glucose dependant tissues like neurons, erythrocytes, testis...). Other tissues (muscles), at rest, use mainly fatty acids for aerobic metabolism. Fatty acids are also used by muscle during aerobic physical activity. Muscles use glucose only in two cases: 1. immediately after meal (lunch), 2. in strong physical activity (mostly anaerobic); in other cases it usually keeps glucose in glykogen, for the case of strong anaerobic activity). Cardiac muscle uses mostly fatty acids, but it also uses glucose, and during physical activity it can also use lactate (produced by skeletal muscles). Ketones produced by liver can be used by almost all tissues (including the brain). The liver produces them, but is the only one that cannot use them.
