Hi, I was just wondering if there is a cap on how long your Personal statement can be? For some obscure reason, I keep thinking it has to be less than 1 page. Is that right? Thanks!

There is no cap perse. but I think the rule of thumb for ideal PS is 800 words. You can go plus minus but thats the general acceptable standard i guess. I read it in some book about resumes and personal statements and most websites also ask for a similar number. I think 800 words fit into 1 eras page. Anyways mine was 895 words... .

Thanks for the info nonstopdoc1. I checked and my PS is 550 words. However when I put it into ERAS (I registered for it last year, just to try it out!), and look at print preview, it prints just a little over a page (of course with the ERAS logo on top). Howver, ERAS doesn't cut it off or anything. Just wondering, do I need it shorten it more? Thanks again!

I to thought there was a cap, but it let me put in as much as I wanted. Rule of thumb is 1 page. People don't have the time to read more than that.

I tried to limit mine to 800 but couldnt squeeze all the stuff in it so finally took the risk of 895 words. And i use to beleive that nobody reads all the PSs from all the applicants especially in IMG friendly hospitals. Interestingly only 2 docs mentioned my PS throughout my interview season. One just read it before he interviewed me but didnt mentioned anything from the PS during the interview. The other doc who metioned my PS was in my very last interview. She said she read my PS and liked it and not only she mentioned what i wrote in it, she also asked me furhter about those things. And it was confirmed that she did like my PS when on match day , I matched with the same program. So as far as I am concerned, I think PS can play a big role in your application if you do it right and they do find time to read yours.
