Dear All, as an International Medical Graduate, who has not worked in the US yet, does it matter which state medical board (licensing authority) I choose when I apply in order to sit Step 3? I couldn't help noticing, that some states (like MN) require certain eligibility requirements (Postgraduate Training Requirements) in applying for Step 3, while others (like CA) do not. So could I tick the box for California, (hopefully) pass Step 3 and then later work in another state? Thanks for your advice, cheers, S.

No it doesnt matters. you can chose only out of the 12 states that allow step 3 without any sort of PG training (US). Yes you can chose one and than go for residency in some other state.

Thanks a million, nonstopdoc1! I found, as you said, 12 states, which do not reqire PG training: ARKANSAS, CALIFORNIA, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, LOUISIANA, MARYLAND, NEVADA, SOUTH DAKOTA, TEXAS, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA (& with some restrictions FLORIDA, NEBRASKA, UTAH) -- as listed on the website: http://www.fsmb.org/2005usmle/html_files/part_4_s... Two more Questions for the forum, if I may: 1.) Any advice, which of these 12 states may be particulary quick (or very slow) in processing the application? 2.) Once I chose one state, do I geographically have to sit the exam in that particular state, or can I chose from any Prometric Center in the US? Thanks a lot, S.

Its does not matter which state you pick for Step 3. Since that state is not processing the Step 3 application. Its all the same. By picking the state your scores will be sent to that state when you apply for your license and if you have not done a residency then you can't apply for the medical license. So moot point. Suggest you just pick a state for the purpose of completing the step 3 application and move on. If you are talking about the license then Connecticut is quick to process your license application once they have the complete application. You can chose from any Prometric Center in the US to sit for the Step 3.
