Adjustment disorder occurs within 3 months of a psychosocial stressor and is usually resolved within 6 months, unless the stressor becomes chronic. Basically the response is out of proportion (vs. normal response). With MDD you have to identify sleep, appetite and energy level changes (etc.) The duration of an untreated episode is usually 6-12 months.
