Hi Guys...

I am an IMG who's about to finish his Steps....

My Step 1 results was 95 (3 months ago)

I am sitting for Step 2CK the next month and CS the following month...

I am currently working as a junior resident in Surgery in UK (I have acheived 2 years up to now).

My interrest is General Surgery...

I am writing this few lignes in regard to get some feedback from people who are in the same situation (I mean have an interrest in surgery and are willing to be trained in the US)

My Q is : What are my chances to get into a Surgical programme?

How can I make possible?

Regards

it can be done. Get your MRCS if you can. Try and get to know US faculty or have your UK faculty who know US faculty help you out.

hi sofianee, sorry to deviate from the topic, but what are the steps to getting a MRCS?

as far as i understand (for a non-UK med graduate):
1) Pass PLAB 1 and 2
2) Look for jobs in various hospitals using BMJ etc. with a typical waiting period of 8-9 months
3) dunno after this......

regards

register for usmle with ECFMG :www.ecfmg.org

take and pass steps I, II CK, and II CS

apply to programs through ERAS: need letters of rec, personal statement. Can't fill out ERAS until July 1 of the year before you want to start residency, ERAS sends your application to programs from Sept 1. You get interviews from Oct-mid Jan, rank programs through the NRMP by mid-June, match results come out in mid-March. Start residency late June.

So basically, try and have all tests done 1 year in advance of when you want to start.

Thanks for your reply Retroviridae!

Well it's sounds straight forward...

I have already passed my Step1...in the 90S

My step 2 ck in a month from now and then Step2 Cs in Philadelphia int two months from now!

I have already a statment letter & 2 recom letters...

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NEXT?

HOW CAN YOU RANK THE SURGICAL PROGRAMMS?

I HAVE SOME INTERRESTS IN ORTHOPAEDICS, DO YOU THINK IT IS STILL POSSIBLE EVEN THOUGH IT'S +++++COMPETITIVE AS PEOPLE SAY???

24 months as a Senior House Officer in 3 to 4 differents surgical specialities.

It's made of 3 parts nowadays , but used to be 2 parts..

Straight forward exam....

you need to look into programs, decide which ones to apply to, and the apply using ERAS. After that, they will invite you for an interview if they like you. Then you rank the programs you interviewed at in the order of where you would most want to go. You enter that in the NRMP website, and programs rank applicants similarly. The computer puts the best match together and releases results on the same day to every applicant. As an international student, they can offer you a position outside the match, meaning they just give you the spot then and there, but it is not that common in surgery.

use FREIDA to research programs: http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.htm...

use ERAS to apply: http://www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm

use NRMP to match: http://www.nrmp.org/
