I think with research and good LoR you should have a good chance. Try very hard for UCSD, but you are right, your scores may be too low for them. But if your PI can pull a favor, anything is possible. See if your PI knows someone elsewhere. I had a classmate in a similar boat as you. Did research for two years, and got a post-match position at U Kansas-Wichita. It can be done!

Hello There retro and bbb, This is my situation now at UCSD...My research is going very well by PI is very happy with it Igot another excellent LOR from one of the attndings in the pulmonary consult service..iusually shadow fellows to the consults and discuss cases to get clinical exposure..Imet the PD(program director )and had a frank chat with him ,he said they do take FMG,s and asked me to attend the Morning report and said if can aget good lor from my PI(he is famous guy) they are going to review my application...the PD forwarded my resume to PC who wrote me back that ineed the California letter befor iapply..igot theletter today. What do you guys think about it??do ihave any chances now since the PD knows me .Iam worried about my draw backs which are scores and year of graduation..My positives are good LORs, probably a publication right now iam working on making contacts ..the cheif resident knows me also..Idont want to fool my self by thinking veru positive about it .Do istill have a chance here if my PI puts good words for me to the PD??BBB your advice will be very help ful coz you are the PC.Any honest reply is highly appreciated.BTW idont require visa ihave a GC.

But the program director already knows about your drawbacks, nicht wahr? Year of graduation, etc. And he is still going to look at your application? Print out your CV include all the stuff that you are worried about and see what happens from there. Not having the visa issues and having research at UCSD is a big plus. Good luck
