Hello Everybody, Excuse me for troubling but as someone living outside the USA I would be very, very grateful if somebody could kindly explain to me the scoring system for the USMLE,especiallly Step 1. For example,if there are 360 questions on the whole paper, what is the minimum number you have to get correct in order to be sure of a pass ? Regards, Atmed.

It's variable from exam to exam. Most people agree that pathology is the most tested field on the exam (anywhere from 25 to 50%). After that, pharmacology, microbiology and physiology are also significant subjects and each can comprise over 10% of the exam, depending on the exam. Anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, immunology take up the next tier. Very few questions are purely histology, cell biology... However, it is important to realize that most of the questions on the exam don't completely fit neatly into one category. For example, a lot of the physiology questions might actually be considered pathophysiology... If you are trying to prepare a strategy for Step 1, First Aid is a good place to start. The first 30 or so pages explain various details about the exam and while the book is a mostly a list of details that you need to know for the exam, if you reasonably understand the medicine behind those details, you will definitely pass comfortably.

To rubyedward: 75 is not passing percent, it's passing 2-digit score. Passing percent is from 60 to 70% - it varies, because answers to hard questions worth more, than to easy ones.

well, according to kaplan, of the 350 questions, only 300 will be counted asmost of the 50 questions are either questions tested for future exams or ones that are excluded from the score cause few candidates got them right. good luck

When you say you should answer correctly 60 to 70% of the questions ...does it mean 60 to 70% of 350 or 300 Q???
