Why is 5% glucose solution hypotonic although it is hyperosmotic?wink

  #2

i think 5% is isosmotic; anyhow because glucose if continuosly netabolized by the tissues therefore after removal of glucose [main osmotic determinant] the solution will become hypo-osmotic

It is a little similar to urea, the difference is that urea pass trough cell membranes by diffusion whereas glucose penetrates by transporters, but quicky if there is an appropriate insuling response, so glucose will not be an osmotic molecule.
