Hi I am a graduate from UK -done MRCP (paeds) 1997-then got married ,got 2 kids and have done nothing over the last 7 years.Due to sit my step 1 in 2 weeks .Although I have been studying for 2 months now I have lost confidence (may be due to exam nerves)

Is it really worth going back. What if I get through the USMLE with say 70s-will I ever get a residency in Paeds. Are they not going to say what have you done for the last 7 years?Shall I just forget about it?

Anyone out there in similar situation?Help please!I just cant study anymore.

faizan, feeling depressed, experiencing panic attacks are usual experiences few weeks before the exam. Don't give up and hang on. As far as I've read in forums, you'd better get above 80. High grades may cover up for the past 7 years. Fam practice, psychiatry, int med, pediat.are said to be easier to match, for imgs. I'm 34,graduated &married in 1995,now with 1 kid(8y), did nothing for 3 years after he's born, working as family physician and emergency physician for the last 4 years, took step1 in march,step1 score:83. See, you're not alone.good lucksmiling face

Hey Merih!! Wow u passed and got 83!! Congrats. I'm so happy for u. I am still at studying:-(

I studied and then had a baby then studied some more...i was planning on taking the step 1 next wk. I did kaplan and got 46%!!! I know its so bad...i am not improving at all. Do u have any advice of what i should do?? I have Goljan audio...i know i need to concentrate more, but with a baby its so hard...all u do is think about the baby! Anyway, i've extended my eligibility period on the advice of my husband (IM resident). Has anyone who had failed and then passed the exam have any suggestions? Need desperate help.

Faizan sorry to take up ur post...i just wanted to telll u that u should do Kaplan simulated exam or NBME...if the score is decent then go for the exam...if they are not...then dont! You can always extend the eligibility period...but dont do it just becuz ur scared...do it b/c u want to improve ur score. Compare with the Kaplan/ NBME scores of others with urs and see how u r doing. Dont make the mistake i did...During my first attempt even when my score wasnt good for my practice tests i went ahead for the exam. My mistake!! anyway, whatever u do, Good LUck!!

Thank for replying. My exam is in 6 days & I am going for it.Have done NBME 1-got 420.Doing form 2 still in process of shock.Average for Kaplan simulated was 70-75%.I personally dont think the real exam correlates with anything.

For Doc mama-I done step 2 CK while being 7.5 months pregnant &passed with 78%(not too good) when it was 2 day exam. Not to forget I missed out 60 MCQs cos kept going to the toilet every 1-2 hours (bad timing). Now my 7 years are going to finish hence I have no choice as I have recently decided to go to USA.So have courage you can do it while being a mum.

Thanx Faizan. I think ur ready for the step...Good luck and God bless. U did good on Kaplan simulated...i've heard people that get 70% or above usuallly end up with a good USMLE score...i cant comment abt NBME as i have not talked to anyone regarding htat yet. Good luck and concentrate. All the questions are answerable...they can just get tricky so be meticulous. All the best!
