Maybe this Q have been asked so many times, but i'm still doubt

Most common cause

St. aureus (Kaplan)

Salmonella (UW)

  #2

MCC of osteomyelitis is staph: aureus....

MCC of osteomyelitis in sickle cell disease is salmonella...

i second SDK's answer. Its written in Kaplan as well.

  #4

common misconception... MCC of osteo in SCD is still Staph!!!

However... it is a common occurence that people with Salmonela osteo are in fact SCD patients.

See the diff?

same impression mdwb.

I've heard it from Kaplan lectures, even Goljan step 1, that althogh salmonella is specially very common in SCD osteo, but overall Staph. aureus is the MCC of osteo in SCD.

But then i saw that Q in UW, and they were saying the opposite, moreover that was the only Q with bibliography...

But anyway, I'll go with Staph.

u guys r correct, salmonella osteomyelitis is coomoner in sicke cell dis population than in normal population but the MCC of osteomyelitis is still S aureus
i hope i made it simple rather than craeting furthur confusion..

Among pts with hemoglobinopathies such as SCD , osteomyelitis

is caused by salmonellae ten times as often as by other bacteria.
(CMDT 2005 ,page 831).

Osteomyelitis is usually due to Salmonella or other gram-negative organisms, such as E. coli. Staphylococcus aureus, the most common cause of osteomyelitis in normal hosts, probably accounts for only one-fourth of all cases in SCD
(UpToDate 13.1)
