Hi Guys For those of you who are taking step 3 after a long gap, and also for those who are planning to restrict their resources to Kaplan materials, I want to emphasise that KAPLAN STEP 3 MATERIAL must be supplemented by Kaplan step 2 material. This is not a kind of joke. It is the absolute truth. The material that is given in Step 3 books is simply not enough to give you the idea and the information required to pass. The USMLE STEP 3 is a managment exam. (as is step 2).However , the components that are tested are 1.History taking,2.Clinical examination3.Pathophysiology of disease process4.Diagnosis,5.Initial steps in management6.continued care and 7.follow-up. Apartfrom these, US health structure, Geriatrics ,are heavily tested. Step 3 material from Kaplan does not have these, and they can be found in Step 2 material!! While I agree that a lot of step 2 material is repeated in step 3 books, but then, Step 2 books are certainly more comprehensive of the two. You need CRUSH THE BOARDS FOR quick review, and for those who have the crush the board for step 2 , I advise that it is the same for steps 2 and 3. Only the cover is different. Swanson, while it is officially regarded as the tool for the family practice board examination, it is indeed very very useful for Step 3. Most of us are cramped for the time for this particular exam, or else it is imminently doable exam.My advise to all those residency aspirants is that , dont relax after step 2, keep revising regularly and you willbe rewarded in STEP 3 and with a H1 VISA TOO!! All the very best for all the step 3 takers 2

Hi jayakrishna, I am hoping to take my step 3 sometime in the near future. How long do you think it takes to prepare for step 3? I took my step 2 end of december. For Step 3, I was planning on reading Kaplan Step 2 notes in addition to the Kaplan and USMLEworld qbanks. Thanks!

Thanks Jayakrishna for explaining step 3 prep and material. Its really very helpful. I would ask you the same question as screwit27 is asking you. plus another question: If we take it before the start of residency (ie without any clinical exp) then how many months should we study for this exam. Good luck to you! Hi Screwit27, When are you planning to take step 3. I would like to join you for this prep. We can coordinate on this forum and will be in touch if you like to! Best wishes, Sar.

Hi Sar, I want to take the exam ASAP (hopefully before the end of the year). We can definitely coordinate and be in touch. Have you decided what you are going to be studying from? Take care.

Hi Sar, I am very busy at work this week. But I am hoping I'll start studying soon. I bought Strong Medicine for step 3 the other day since a lot of people recommended it. I am planning on reading Kaplan Step 2 notes and the UW qbank/CCS cases. I am thinking or starting with Medicine. How about you. G.

Thanks for the nicer words.Idea is to help the people who need it.Since you have done step 2 recently, you should be doing ok with step 3 too.Keep revising the material and keep that in memory. Step 3 is a management exam, so go ahead and ask yourself questions about management.Sinusitis, you start Amox, patient comes back 2 days later, no improvement, what to do? Kindof things.Make your strategy for every single clinical situation, and you should be doing extremely well.Try finishing up the Swanson's and that should give you the insight of problem based learning.Do usmleworld questions in timed mode and you will get familiarise with the question format.Obviously, you will be underpressure while doing questions, so it is better you get familiar with patterns, like Young sexually active with joint effusion, once you have paraphrased this, the management should flash in yourmind! You should quickly and correctly recall the best initial step in managment is Arthrocentesis, Most common aetiological agent is Gonococcus, and the Management is Ceftriaxone......etc.If you are familiar with all the diseases given in Crush step3, then it is indeed easy for you. All the verybest for your exam Jayakrishna
