I know its multifactorial but what causes cleft lip and cleft palate embryologically?

first of all it is imp to know how they develop.PALATE-A)intermaxillary segment forms when the medial growth of maxillary prominence causes the 2 medial nasal prominences to fuse in middle.this segment forms-PHILTRUM OF LIP,4 INCISOR TEETH,PRIMARY PALATE.

SECONDARY PALATE-from outgrowths of maxillary prominences called-PALATINE SHELVES.

anterior CP-palatine shelves fail to fuse with primary palate.

posterior CP-when palatine shelves fail to fuse with eachother&nasl septum.

anteroposterior CP-combination of above defects.

CLEFT LIP-maxillary prominence fail to fuse with median nasal prominence.

the underlying somitomeric mesoderm&neural crest fail to expand resulting in a persistent labial groove.
