Calculate total HCO3 reabsorption from following data..
Clearance of Inulin=3L/day
plasma HCO3=25mmol/L
urine HCO3=0
urine pH=5.8
Titrable acids in urine=26
nontitrable acids in urine=48
a)0
b)74
c)75
d)149
e)48
f)26

well i am confused abt the data!

inulin clearnce reflects exactly the GFR.......it's just 3L/day tht's wayyyyy too low!

anyway if i jst follow the rule of thumb......

filtered load for HCO3-=GFR X P(HCO3)

= 3L/day X 25mmol/L

=75 mmol/day!(all of it has reabsorbed)

still! GFR of 3L is freaking me out!

B.74

new H2co3 gain=total acid loss.
74=26+48.

  #4

i think the q is asking abt reabsorption  :|

yes ,i think these new H2co3 will form and reabsorb and Acid will be secreted!
plz tell me which i,m thinking bwrong??

  #6

i am confused too....but i still think it's abt reabsortion tht takes place in prox. tubule!

lets wait for the ans by sdk.
i thinlk data is to make u confuse by giving extra information.

  #8

Total Bicarb Reabsorption=Prox tubule + Distal Tubule

At Prox Tubule--Filtrn Load=GFR x Pl.Conc
3 x 25=75

At Distal Tubule--Titrable acid + Non titrable acid
26 + 48 = 74

So, Total Bicarb Reabs = 75 + 74
= 149..
I hope I am right.

  #9

well tht's a 3rd possibility......too bad every one of it is among the options!

hey SDK whtz the answer!

and throw some light over this reabsorption issue!

mle04 ur ans sounds complete.
as its asking Total Bicarbonate reabsoprtion

  #11

Don't worry about the values but only think that what is asking......
I am just trying to clearify ur concepts about calculating problems......
So answer is 149 as write by mle04.... 8)
I didn't think that GFR is too low in this Qs....
