Hi I am IMG who was in residency program (India) untill Aug 2000 (that was my 1st year of 3 year program)
I came here to do PhD which I am finishing up.
If I start taking exams now, I think I will appear for match in 2007 programs. That will be 6 years out of hospital set up.
I want to know, will there be a problem.
Ofcourse, My scores in MLE will influence it a lot, I imagine.
The few ways I plan to counter this notions are...
1. Use my publications as trump card. (One of them I beleive will be in nature group of journals)
2. Attend some kind of observership or clerkship

What would you suggest? Your comments will help me a lot.
Thanks

Hi,

I am also an IMG from India. I came to US in 2002 and completed my masters in biomedical engineering. I had research experience and couple of abstracts (manuscipts in preparation)-this really helped impress the interviewers. However, many program directors told me directly that the fact that it was a long time since I graduated (2001) and was'nt in tocuh with the clinical side, were the only things that went against me. One of them even debated with me as to how I could assure him that my reseach/publications would adequately reflect my clinical skills.

They told me that an observership would have helped. I am not sure if others will also feel the same. However, since then I have been advising my friends to take up some observership.

If we consider getting a resdency...from my experience, I would rate: Step 2 scores first-passing Step 3 is a BIG PLUS for IMG's-your personality, communication skills, your confidence and listening skills-clinical experience-research experience (will help most if it is related to medicine)

Hope this helps. All the best!

By the way- I forgot to congratulate you on your 'nature' publication-Please highlight it in your resume-you probably would'nt need the rest of the stuff on it then.smiling face However, I would like to stress that an observship will definitely help.

Good luck!
