hi, i am an IMG and am giving Step2. I plan to give CSA by April. I was wondering if my wearing a head scarf will affect my CSA result or getting into a residency programme. Things have changed in USA after 9/11. Will my wearing a head scarf be a barrier in my way to get into a residency? I am not sure about the Visa as well.

As a program coordinator, I can't tell you that it won't make a difference everywhere, but in the larger programs, it won't be a big deal. Practice your interviewing skills so that your scarf isn't what is noticed - you want to be noticed!! Your personality, knowledge and social skills need to shine.

Take care and good luck!

i'm a muslim...brought with an american education and all....
after 9/11 there have been discrimination againt females wearing scarves...but one thing is...if u have the score, no one can stop u...u have 2 aim higher then everyone else

i have a muslim friend who's doing her residency in surgery...mashallah, she still wears her scarf...

ok, i am a muslim also, i've been respected in this country more than my own country , i did CSA and i passed, while lot of others failed... i am working in research and i am doing great.... and guess what ?? everybody is asking me about my veil, where did you get them? i like the color and things like this... USA IS GREAT,BECAUSE IT IS A FAIR COUNTRY....
JUST SMILE TO YOUR PATIENT IN THE CSA ... SHOW THEM THAT WE CARE AND SPEAK CLEARLY... Allah maek

Peace everyone on this forum..
I've been searching for such a web site , kind of a reference where i can benifit from the experiance of many who went through exactly the same as i'm expecting to go through to start my residency in the States (God's willing)..

now, I'm studying for step I ..( I'm a recent Graduate from Egypt; awaiting my final grades).. engaged to be married to an american..
I want to know what the chances are, of getting a visa after passing step I?
and how long is it gonna take if I apply for marriage visa instead..
to make my point clear, I plan on sitting for step I in the Summer (June-July).. will get married and start applying for a visa afterwards..
Should it be easier and faster if I apply for Marriage visa ?..

Another thing, I've been alittle concerned too, about my Hijab (my veil), whether it's likely to influence the treatment I will get there from doctors, co-worker, patients or even ppl on the streets.. but my fiance reassured me about it , saying that it's not a problem esp in larger cities..

Anyway, God bless those who struggle to be better men and women for His Sake!

Be well, my friends

Your fiance is correct - I wouldn't even worry about it. This is where your personality will shine through - and your veil won't make a difference.

It is OK to wear a scarf when you are a resident. However, I wouldn't recommend wearing a scarf during your interview or sending pictures in the scarf with your application. Of course, it is illegal to discriminate based on religion or nationality in this country, but still you never know. Better to be safe than sorry.
