hello. seems to me you did what should have been done - counseling, draping, etc. it's all just a matter of how smoothly things were done. communication and interpersonal skills mean that not only you say what you have to say but you have to say them in a clear, concise and empathic manner. you have to establish rapport with the standardized patient. there must be eye contact. make sure your SP understands what u're talking about. use layman's words. speak slowly. before you do anything to the patient, tell the patient about it so that he won't feel uncomfortable. for example, if you're going to check his palpebral conjunctivae, tell him that u're going to touch his eyes. don't just pull his lids down without warning. be warm to the patient. treat the patient as if you're a customer care representative. ask them if they have any questions or things needing clarification. ask them what else you can do for them. practice the cases with a friend and ask for feedback. ask if your friend felt at ease while you were doing your physical exam and if he understood your advice. i practiced with my mom and sisters and since they had no medical background, they would often have a confused look on their faces whenever i used medical jargon. that's when i knew i often assume patients understand medical terms. good luck and i hope i'm able to help you with this post.

I have no idea how good the kaplan course is but i do know that it's expensive that's why i never enrolled. i think you have enough references (kaplan book and uworld cases). all you need to do is practice. given a limited budget, i suggest you should also practice with people who have already passed the CS exam. don't be discouraged. just keep ur cool and u'll do well in the exam.
