community hospitals range from very good to very bad. University programs tend to all be at least decent. I liked one community program a lot (Methodist in Dallas). But the problem with all community programs is you make it that much harder for you to get a fellowship. If you don't want a fellowship, then it doesn't matter. Go to the laid back, collegial community program. If you do want a fellowship, I think university is always better.

I matched at Henry Ford, this program have its own fellowship, including cardiology or GI, also I went to Maimonedes for interview and again have fellowship. I went for some University prgrms for interview, Texas Tech Lubbock, SIU, and I tought HF was a better option.

To a certain extent retroviridae is right but there also very good community hospitals which have no problem in getting fellow. For example St. Vincent Indiana has 100% fellow placements but its just a community hospital with no fellow programs in it except for cardio. What counts most is how you performed during your residency. The only thing I do not like about a university program is that its too big.Nobody knows you and its easy to get lost.Whereas in the community program everyone knows each other and the relationship with an attending with his/her residents is more personal.....which may play an important role when they advocate for you in getting a fellowship. This is just my personal opinion.

i agree with u malaysian....that's the reason i ranked the community program in my place as no 1 choice..(though after lot of thinking..)...choice between fellowship and friendly atmosphere is tough...but it is true that both is available in good community programs....i will try to write my experiences and about the programs i visited soon...
