Hi everyone,
i am a IMG and 2 days ago I sucessfully vaulted the visa hurdle (after a couple of failed attempts). the visa is only good enough to take the CSA. The only date for CSA which I could get is on Nov20.
1. Can I apply for Step3 before I get my ECFMG certification?
2. If the answer to the first is YES, then some of my problems at least are solved! smiling face If the answer is NO, then that means that I can APPLY for Step3 only on maybe Jan 15-20/2004, take step 3 even at the earliest on Feb 20-25, and the result would come in only after the match! In that event what happens to my chances of matching and what about making it to the H1B visa.
3.BBB do you suggest something for me?? Is J1 a better option for me?? What is the big problem with J1 that people keep talking about??
I know your advice is the best there is.
Thanx

Check ECFMG web page for information about when you can apply for the step 3 exam - also the USMLE web site will give you valuable information.

The "problem" with the J1 visa is that waiver positions that you can apply for following residency aren't as easy to get as they used to be. The problem is that persons don't want to run the risk of having to go home following residency. They want to stay in the USA and work.

Again, I know less than 8-10 physicians who have returned to their home country after training - since 1988.

Good luck

About applying to step 3: you can apply as soon as you receive your ECFMG certification online, you don't have to wait for your written part. That is after you have taken and passed CSA. You can however, take step 3 on late january, as your result will be available before match day, so you can go after an H1B visa

Hope that was usefull!
