Hi, I'm an Indian IMG. I have a 10 yr multiple entry B1/B2 visa. I'm just starting prep for Step 1 and I wanted to do it from the US. Now I want to know that if I get a 6-mth duration of stay at the port of entry, after the 6-mth period, for how long will I have to leave the country before I can re-enter? And do they give a 6-mth duration of stay every time you re-enter?

HI anij, I left USA last time after 6 months of permission on B1b2 visa, I was adviced to wait at least 2 weeks before reenter and to have a good reason for coming back, so I ask for a letter of invitation to the doctor I volunteered with, stating that I was invited to observe lab procedures.
I showed the letter to the officer and I have no problem reentering again after one month, the problem is that they only gave me 3 month permission, regardless I asked the officer to extend the time, he said that time was enough for me.
sumarizing, there is no way you could know how long your permission is going to be that depends on the custom officer, you could explain your reasons and everithing, but if you need more time than you were given, you can always ask for an extension of your stay, which is exactly what Iam thinking.
