Thanks in advance for your time. I am already in US on F1 and got resideny in IM this year. I would like to know if I can do a status change from F1 to J1 and start my residency without going back to my country?

Thank you!

I don't believe that there is a way. I believe that you need to return to your home country to obtain the visa. Or wait MONTHS and start late and possibly loose your residency spot.

Sorry!

Well, that doesnt suit me at all... but its always good to know the reality before making any plans... I guess I shall go for the H1 as that has a more predictable path... the risk there is that I am not done with my step 3... anyway, thanks again... your replies help many of us or perhaps all of us!!!

Regards!!

Plan on having step 3 results before you apply for the visa - it's part of the requirements.

Best of luck!

hi bbb, i sent you a PM, but my message is a bit confusing maybe ul read this...

I want to obtain an H1b visa this coming 2006... so m getting my step3 after i get ecfmg certified, my question is... once i sit for a step3 on any one of the states like NY, CT, TX... will my step3 be valid on ALL STATES? and with that... can any state sponsor me for an H1b then??? or should it be anyone of the 11 states on which IMGs can sit for step3 without obtaining 1-2 years of residency in the US yet... thanks so much, this whole visa thing is confusing!!!

Step 3 results are okay for all the states.
