I have heard that research does help to enter a good residency program, especially in the Ivy league schools. I am trying to see if it is really true, though one of my friend had done a lot of research before entering a good residency in anesthesiology.

There is a chart in the First Aid for step 2 with the importance of the academics and the research activity is on the last place.
Don't know if it is quite true what they say there!

I certainly don't think it will hurt (it can only help i think) if you do research given you have time. But I have heard more recently that having done research will really help you in your quest for a Fellowship, esp for competitive spots like GI, Cardio, etc.

If somebody gets around 77 and 80 in MLE and joins a research program....can it help in getting into residency of psychiatry or family practise, if somebody is on a green card?

please advice!

dear somebody
if somebody has a green card, anybody can get a residency in FP or psych. so chill

a better resource for step 2 is crush the boards....though the slides and pictures in first aid are pretty good.

Yes, it does help. I won't lie and tell you that it doesn't. But it also isn't the only thing that is important.

A former chairman of the department once said "I want the best medical graduates that are out there - American, International; I don't care, I want the best."
