Old Qs..... You are called to the emergency room to evaluate a 62-year-old homeless woman with a complaint of hearing voices for the last three to four days. Prior to arranging her transfer to the psychiatric unit, you notice the patient is making seemingly involuntary facial grimaces. She blinks uncontrollably and smacks her lips continuously. She also protrudes her tongue from time to time throughout your conversation with her. She is able to tell you that she has schizophrenia and has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for the past 25 years. What do you conclude about her facial and tongue movements? A. They are part of her schizophrenia and indicate that she has been without medication for approximately four weeks. B. They indicate that in addition to schizophrenia this patient suffers from Tourette's syndrome. C. They are most probably the result of long-term use of antipsychotic medication and represent tardive dyskinesia. D. They are probably clinically insignificant and represent ‘tics’ that have been present in this patient since childhood. E. They represent muscular spasms that result from exposure to the elements; once the patient is in a controlled environment, they will disappear. I have no answer for this.....not in previous discussion..
