Hi everybody! I have a question to all of you. I have been doing basic research for the past year in the very well known US university. But everything goes very slowly, I maybe have a chance for one publication.......... At the same time I have a chance to get some US clinical experience, but it is impossible to do both at the same time. I am really fed up with the research work, but I am afraid that if I quit my boss is not going to write me a LOR. On the other hand I can get LOR from my clinical rotation. What should I do? Any advice please!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to apply for 2006 Match.

My interviewers were more interested in the clinical experience and even asked "what exactly did you do" during your USCE. Regards!

Thank you for your advice! What kind of residency did you enter?

I want to enter university based program. In this case, is it better for me to get some USCE?

It sure helps for either community or university programs. I think research helps more when u apply for fellowships but I might be wrong, it is only my opinion.

I’ve been doing research for a couple of years, (papers and presentations) and I did 2 mo observership. My scores were 84 for step 1 and 87 for step 2. I’ve matched in pediatrics in a university based program and all they asked me during this interview was research- related, nothing about USCE. I’m not saying that is the same in any program- this was just my case. I’ve seen that you and your spouse got really high scores – congratulations! – so research may not be as important for you as it was for me. Anyway, I would try to arrange a part-time setting in research ( if possible, at least for a while), and get some USCE in the meanwhile. In this way you’ll get 2 LOR. And – I agree with prep4usmle – any publication will help you very much when applying for fellowship – I hope this helps. Regards

Thank you very much for your advice! The problem is that my boss in research doesn't want me to work part time. It must be all or nothing. Do you think that doing clinical work on the weekends and during my vacation would be a good idea? Thanks again!

I think is a great idea – I just hope you won’t get very tired – but, I guess this will be a preview of the resident lifestyle. What residency are you applying for? Regards!
