i am an img currently doing my mbbs at MAMC, new delhi , india we here have a pg entrance examination like everywhere else after mbbs. i was wondering that if * i get a residency in say dermatology/ophtalmology in india at AIIMS (the most famed medical college of india ) but get a pathology/paeds/community med./int.med in a top us college. what should i opt for then. - i am not intersted in any of these programs except int. med .and ophta/dermat are not so famous branches in india contrary to us. - if i do say ophta in india and then give usmle, will my chances be there to get a ophta residency in us provided i have enough lor's and research. what should i do to get the same branch in us in which i have done pg in india. * if i get radiodiagnosis in aiims india (there is only 1 seat !!) and int. med. in us top college , then what * if , if i get a surgery residency in not so famous us college and radio in aiims or int. med. in top us college then what. basically i am confused in choosing my college. my priorties are a> surgery b> radio diagnosis c> int. med but then no branch of medicine is less than any other in any way. each has its joys , each has its sorrows! how will all this eeffect my job placement .

hi vinay saini i dont know how u study.but idid my mbbs from india too.its not that easy to get into AIIMS.but nothing is impossible.if wework hard.opthal from AIIMS is very good.i know few people who have done opthal from AIIMS and got direct fellowships in US.but i think they do fellow ship on J1 and go back.i dont know whats the procedure.but its better u decide what u want to do and where u want to stay.dont waste ur time by doing PG course there and then residency here. hope it helps. bye dev p.s bythe way who said opthal and dermat are not popular in india.we just dont payenough attention, but dermatlogists earn lot of money with less strenuos work.its just that when we are young we see only hectic fields as competitive

For some reason programs which are shunned by Indian docs in India such as Ophtho,dermat,patho.,ENT,Rehab./Occupational Med. are considered hot fields in the western world.Whereas those fields which are popular among Indian docs like Paeds,IM,O&G,Neurology are shunned by western docs! The only exceptions are Radiology,Surgery,Ortho. which are universally seeked. It takes all sorts to make this world....don' you think so!
