HI vausmle I also have this kind of problem, but in my case the proposal is still pending, so in the meanwhile I am as a volunteer in a B1 B2. I call an immigrant consultant and he said I shouldnñt take the risk, because the 2 year staying home thing after finished J1, but then I look for it trough the ECFMG website and i find there is different kinds of J1 visa, one of them is J1 research and i dont think one should get back to the homecountry after that, so I am thinking about asking another immigration consultant with details or even talk to the US immigration department to make sure of it. if i know something I let you know, or if you find out before I will appreciate your input. best wishes

Hey, Thanks george. i have also met an immigration consultant.. He was pretty confident that this thing won't be a problem. Most probably after the J1 research is finished you can file for a Waiver. This might take a few weeks. ALL this sounds troubling..but I guess we'll have to take the risk if we want to give a boost to our applications by doing some research in US. Take care

According to the ECFMG, if you remain in the US to do research for less than 6 months you are still eligible for a J1 'alien physician'.

I have heard that if you enter states on J1 and the2 yr HRR applies to you. You can enter again on a j1 without applying for the waiver in those 2 yrs. So we can go ahead with the residency geaorge after research if we can accept the fact that we'll be able to do residency only on aJ1 and NOT H1B

Hi, Althougth I don't want to get a residency that sponsors only J1, we never know... specially if it is your only choice... I had a J1 research visa, got the waiver and now have a H1B visa... If someone offer me a position only on J1, can the ECFMG sponsor me? Or since I have the waiver, they can not.... Please if someone is in the same situation and knows the answer I would appreciate a lot!!! Need help... Thanks Heloisa PS: I called once the ECFMG and the guy in the one was confused about the situation and did not know that to tell me...

Hello! I think the following webpage might help clearify what J1 and H1 visa is all about before you actually proceed with the application http://www.essentialmedicine.net/imgessential/ess... in short. J1 is a goverment sponsor visa that you apply via your home goverment and you need to go back to you home countyr for at least 2 years after you have finished your training and the max time here is 7 years..althought you might be able to file for extension but it is not easy...and H1b is just like immigration visa...no obligation but for you stay in the country after residency, you need to fine someone who is willing to sponsor a green card application for you...

Hi friends, I am on a business visa and I got an opportunity to work as research scholar in good Univ. They r sponsoring J1 visa for me. I would like to know whether I should convert my status from B1 to J1 within US or go back to India( my home country) to get it stamped from the consulate there. If anybody has gone through this process I would really appreciate if they could provide me your valuable opinion.

Dear helop, I need your help. I am now having J1 research visa and I want to apply for waiver. A resdiency program will sponsor me with h1b. In this case, can I write in the statement of reason(for applying waiver) that i want to apply waiver and change visa status to receive graduate medical training? Is there any wording strategy I need to pay attention to? Thanks a lot !
