I am a medical graduate from china and I have got my master's degree in my country(7 year program). My major is gastrointestinal disease. I am now a phd student . My research focus on cancer cell signalling.

I have several questions. I will highly appreciate your enthusiasm if you can share some information with me.

1. Would it be a great help to my match if I get my phd degree? Instead of saying, is it worth doing so if I spend 4-5 years on phd before matching?
2. Would it be very difficult if I wanna to be matched to a gastrointestinal disease program?

it is up to you. If you want to just be a general practitioner, and you don't care where you go to residency, your PhD will not help much.

HOWEVER, if you want a competitive university-based program, your PhD may very well help you. AND, if you really want to do GI, which is one of the most competitive fellowships to get, a PhD with a GI bent (and there should be a way to weave GI into a cancer signalling thesis) would be very useful.

In the end, it is up to you. What do you want to get out of this? Do you want to do academic research? Or do you just want to be an IM doc and maybe do a GI fellowship?
