I'm in a very confusing situation,my test is due on March/30 with only 2 weeks to go. I've been preparing long time ago but was on and off all the time I only started seriously about a month ago with so littile time to prepare because I was in my 2nd eligibility period wich ends this month. i have a 21 month old that i put in a day care for the first time also a month ago.my life is full of great challenges but I also struggle to find my way out of this. now I dont feel like I'm ready for the test with a very low score on q bank ,not even finished yet a usmle score of 56% .what is best for me to do not show up for the test and study for more or just go and fail and study for next time. I've been pushed to take the test no matter what by my husband {thinking of all the money that we've put into this} either way I'm gonna pay it again so .. please help me with this situation I'm lost''totaly

your Q-bank score is not great. Perhaps you should take the NBME and get a good idea of just how you will do on the test. If you don't like that score, I would say just postpone your test. You will lose the money, but having a fail or just pass on your transcript will hurt your chances for a residency.

dear lenaah i was in you situaion before.i didn't have much time to study because my son was 6 mo old by that time and i made mistake scedruling my test date early, i extwended and i didn't have choice even i knew it that i will fail but my point is i think you should risk it and take test first of all you will gain lot of experience, second thing is you never know god makes miracles. and another thing is you loosing that money anyway. i wish you best luck mana

Hi Leena, I know what you mean, I ve been in the similar situation. Dr Daupherty on kaplan tapes says if your score 50 or less than definitely you are not ready and need to study more. It's really hard to give an advise in situation like this. Probably, if it would be only YOUR decision, you d rather cancel the exam and take it when you r confident, because probable fail on the record decreases your chances to find a good residency. But sinse your husband helped you to pay for it, you should discuss it with him. I'd recomment to do Qbank for the last 2 weeks, read the explanations thoroghly, and then do NMBE exam right before your exam date. NMBE correlates very closely with your real exam score. You can also start the real exam, but if you notice you r not doing well at all, then stop. I think "incomplete" on the record is better than "fail". Or you can pursuade your husband that you really need more time to get a good score. I know one person, she decided do not take the exam because she didn't feel ready. So you wouldn't be alone. Good luck to you! And remember, you are only one who knows the answer.

this is realy helpful,I think I'll do NBME one day before the exam and decide bases upon the score. this is realy a very difficult and emotional time for me and so far i consider my self studying in a steady base for less than amonth so far.which is not enough at all. thanks every one for your input and i wish you the best

hi lenaah what happend is i took test and i fail i got 73 actually iwas surprised, i left alone than step1 and prepered step2 passed got 89 .now i came back to step1 and planning to take it in may, will see what will happen, point is i,m not that scared anymore. but i think everything is up to i think is better fail than get very low score i don't think residency programs care much about you failing, they more care about your score.and also in finding residency your status metters lot, if you have green card or not. good luck

Hi mana I wish you all the best in step 1 like you said is better fail than have a low score but i think you be able to get a great score this time becouse you have gotten over a lot of the fear and unsertainty ,yea may be a good idea if I felt I'm not going to pass just drop the test better than getting a very low score. yes I have green card so ,but I'm also an old IMG that make it even worse with the requirement of US experience and all that story, plus I have been away from practicing medicine, one funny thing I did in the US is I worked one year as Lab. assistance and another as medicale care tech. wish you all the best .
