Are the tests such as pharmacology, biochem, physiology, the same as the USMLE step 1, or are the subject tests more achievement and knowledge while the usmle is more application of information?

Some second-year US med students are required to take NBME subject tests. The tests are made by the NBME, but they are used by some medical schools as final exams because then they can compare their students to students in the other medical schools. There is one in each of the major subjects. They are also called shelf exams. For anyone who has taken them, how do the questions compare to the USMLE step 1?
