Ribosomes are of two kinds, those attached to the RER and those free in the cytoplasm that form plysomes. Those attached to the RER synthesize proteins for export , for the cell membrane or to be internalized in lysosomes. These proteins contain a signal sequence that makes the ribosome to attach to the RER since the beginning of synthesis. Proteins destined to internal use (Cytosol) lack the signal sequence, so the ribosomes remain free (unattached).
