Is anyone thinking of preparing for the Australian AMC exams or giving USMLE for N.Zealand and not the US? I've heard they(Australia) are welcoming doctors?? Half my family is in Australia and so if given an option I would prefer going there rather than US.Any input would be appreciated.

Hi VZ Australia is opening it's arms to foreign doctors becauses of shortages in certain fields. I am an Australian graduate(radiology registrar) but am now residing and training in the US(moved because of marriage). Competition is fierce for the specialties among australian grads so most foreign grads have only a few choices, these are: 1. family medicine 2. ob/gyn. 3. paeds 4.general surgery in rural areas. 5. emergency medicne to enter the internal med tract you have to get into the basic physician training program..which is competitive and same with surgery you need to enter basic surgery program also hard. I hear from foreign grads that the AMC exams are difficult...I have never seen them. The govt. tends to place the foreign grads for a couple of years in smaller cities or rural areas. I worked in Sydney in a major teaching hospital, we had foreign grads but they were in the OB/gyn dept, paeds hospital, ER department or entering family med programs. In some of our secondment hospitals we had trainees in some other areas. At the end if you complete your family med etc program or even paeds you will be living in an awesome country...Sydney is one of the best cities I believe. you will be earning a very good income and the training you will receive at university teaching hospitals is amazing.
