Until we (programs) see if the elimination of the TOEFL has any affect on the quality of the IMGs that we have applying to the program, I can't really answer this question. Logically, it certainly will make things a little easier as you will have one less test to prepare for. Since I haven't taken any of the exams - I'm not a doctor, just a program coordinator, I think all the tests are difficult. I'll poll some of my interns and see what they think. Gee, no answers, eh? :?

Dear bbb, Thank you for responding to my questions. I have graduated from medical school in 1994 in Iran, and started the residency program in Anesthesiology and finished it in 1997 ,since then I worked in hospitals related to university as a anesthesiologist till 2002. Now I am in U.S and I have green card,I am interested in internal medicine to continue in ICU fellowship. Since I have graduated in 1994, I am wondering if my job experience and my speciality will be helpful to be approved in internal medicine ? sincerely yours, soheil.

I do have one question - will your medical school be able to verify your credentials for licensing and ECFMG? I know that in the past, your country's medical school weren't able to verify this because the government didn't want them too. Practice interviewing skills, try and get some US volunteer experience, and good luck.

Dear bbb, Thank you for your email,as you mentioned in the past we had some problems with our goverment to verify our credentials .but now there is no problem with that if we can reach U.S (visa matters). I was lucky to have my green card ,I have friends in Iran who have passed the USMLE exams with very good scores but they couldn't get the visa. sincerely yours, soheil.

Hello BBB, I'm in quite a bad situation. It took me 3 three attempts to finally pass the Step 1. I've just received a failing score on my first attempt at the Step 2. I've been working under a docter doing research for about a year. I've done about a months worth of observership at a local ER dept. With all this, would it be wise to even continue on with the residency preparation process-TOEFL, CSA, MATCH? What should I do to improve my chances for residency? Your reply will be greatly appreciated. John

That decision can only come from you. How much do you want to be a physician in the USA? Are you applying for IM, Radiology, Peds, Family Medicine? If you want it that much, then you need to continue. But that is a decision that can only come from you. On the other hand, have I known physicians that have failed the tests and gotten into residency? Yes, I have known a few. Good luck with what you decide. bbb
