Hi guys..did any one knows about the appropriate visa some one should seek to do an observship? This issue confuses lots of people!!

Thanks Ahab, I have been asking lots of people too, and The conclusion that I got is that u have to ask the legal department in the hospital u will do the observship for the appropriate visa...Thanks for replying..let me know if have further information!!!

The issue of a visa was never raised by the hospital to me, i found out off others in my class who have done electives in the states before. After getting my confirmation in writing from the hospital I called the US embassy visa information number and they told me i needed a b1/b2 visa which i then applied for and had to travel to the embassy where I was given it pretty easily

hi, i'm on b1/b2 & doing an observership currently..but i had this question- what's the purpose of doing an observership? in my experience, since i'm only allowed to observe, there is not much that i can do to impress my boss/team, which means its gonna be difficult for them to give me an lor thats 'good enough'. i neither get to interview the patient on my own/ write on their chart/ scrub in & assist for a case/......so, what can they finally put down about me on the lor? atleast i'm getting a good exposure which i think might make me more confident for step 2 cs (that i plan to take next month). but apart from that, how else do i benefit from it?

hey, you could benefit a great deal of this opportunity, I did the same as you, observership on a B1B2, I tried to involve myself in patients presentations (whit the help of the team residents), and in fact I got a paper published as a second author, and three letters of recomendation of the attendings, those are not poems about my job there, but hey, what else could I wish after just 1 month in one service and 1 and a half in the other one.
just try to talk to the attendingd and residents about your goals, they are human beings after all, most of them are very comprehensive and will help you. just let them know that you are very committed with your rotation and if there is some work to do in one of their papers in preparation you will be more than glad to help.

here is what I recommend you to do
go to freida http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.htm...
get all the e mail address of the program directors where you are interested in taking the observership, as many as you can.
some of them will deny you the opportunity, some others wont even respond, but at least few of them will say yes to your petition, and after that they will guide you trough the proccess and paperwork needed.
I did it like this cause I didnīt have any relationship. hope it helps

one more thing..do u think that it is better to contact the program director or the program coordinator or may contact both from ur experience in this matter?

Hi Carlos I did it trough the washington hospital center in DC, they dont have an official observership program but I e mailed them.
