Hi,

I just found out that I have failed in step 1. I have very upset and want to understand if it is even worth giving it a second shot. I just got 170/70 and am very disappointed. What if I decide to take step 1 again and do well. Would my my attempt failure in Step 1 hinder my residency admission in any way?

When you apply for a residency do you have to declare the number of attempts per step and does that affect your chances of getting a slot.

Do not give up !!!! Try it again !! The fact that you failed step 1 does not mean anything....the USMLE have a passing rate of 60 or 70 %...so do not give up!! There are a lot of med students out there who tried a couple of times and they are still trying....next time be more careful, do more practice questions. It is going to be all right...it is better to get a failing result that a low result....it will be better next time.
About bad consequences in the residency? hmmm...I know someone who took his step 1 and step 2 twice and now he is doing his residency in surgery!!
Remember: you may have lost a fight but not the war....thus, you go and get your books, study HARDER and give it a try again !! YOU CAN DO IT.

DO NOT GIVE UP!!!

I just took and passed Step 1 for the FOURTH time in January and passed with 210/85. I was so depressed and upset about not being able to pass it with my previous attempts. If you read my diary - Pinkangel's daily diary in the journal section of this forum, you'll know my story. My third attempt resulted in a 170/70, just like you. My failure cost me my residency at a prestigious training program in last year's Match. I'm in the Match this year and got interviews from competitive programs despite my previous failures, and yes, you do have to list all your previous attempts. Although your failures hurt your application, the rest of your credentials are also very important in the overall competitiveness of your application. I passed Step 2 on my first attempt, had very strong recommendation letters, and had honors in my acting internships for the specialty I am applying for. Please do not give up so easily. Perserverence pays off!

All the best,
pinkangel

Hi, Pinkangel
Thanks for your experiences and encourage to all who have failed step1. I may one among of them after I checked my OASIS report today.
I like to ask that which step is more difficult compare the step1 and 2? I like to have it prepare and hopfuly pass in this year (10 months of time). since I had one time prep for step1. do you think it is Ok? it seems like step 2 is easy for me after I read the first aid for step2 during my waiting score time. It may due to my step1 prep by using Kaplan Q-bank which have a lot clinical staff. which step you think will better to target next? Thanks again for your post and warm heart.

all the best!

Thanks pinkangel & coralibolivian for all your encouragement. I feel I should try again for step 1.

To be able to apply for a residency program in 2006 fall by when should I be done with my step1, step2 and CS? Right now I am trying to understand if at all I will be able to apply for 2006 or not.

I want to make sure that I can apply to all the possible schools for 2006. When do all the schools release their applications? What If I can’t apply for 2006 fall then by when should I complete my steps for applying for 2007 spring? Is it better to apply in fall or spring?

Thanks!
