Hi Everyone,

I am applying for the 2006 match. The problem is that I am already into the PhD program (first year) at US. Would this question crop up in the interview that why I am leaving PhD? Please let me know? Any suggestions how to tackle this.

There is one ray of hope, in my program there is an option of finishing with a MS by May 2006, that has been mentioned in the program book, but it is both rare and comes with other complications.
or should I hide that I am already doing PhD in the interviews?

Please give your valuable suggestions.

I would highly appreciate them!!!

Just tell them that you are still very much interested in Ph.D and you will pursue this after your residency.

Veer-Zara,

You can still do Ph.D after your residency...I know a few doctors who were practicing and were doing their Ph.D at the same time....its not impossible. All you need is a thesis a supervisor and ofcourse time for your thesis.
In fact it makes sense that you do Ph.D after masters since Ph.D is higher level than Masters when it comes to research.
But then ALOT of people do their Ph.D first and then residency! This is because they have a better chance of getting into a good programme.

It looks bad if you tell them 'I decided not to do Ph.D because I didn't like it'

hello swederoxette and others
i was facing the same situation as u. How long does it take for your PhD? You might also want to consider the fact that unlike masters the time frame of a PhD is not fixed, one might even take 5 or more years. If someone really feels like changing tracks for residency is that a problem? people with music majors have later become doctors!

hii veer zaara .. i have a similar doubt .. i m a IMG . . can u apply for residency while doing ur master s .. will it lead 2 any visa problems .. any suggestions will b helpul .. thnx in advance

Yes its true....there is no fixed time frame for Ph.D....but generally people tend to take 3 years.Ofcourse you can still apply for the match while doing your masters.....but please do realise getting a long leave for interviews and exams may prove a bit problematic and if your supervisor isn't supportive then you will face difficulties.I can't answer for visa but I doubt it there is any problem in that aspect.Best for you to complete your Masters if you're already half way through.
