Hi,
First off : good luck in ur endeavors. Just be sure to keep on endeavoring smiling face
For study material, you would need Kaplan. Even if you decided to look up a few other books to study or use as sidekicks. U can find the names of the books used for studying on this very forum :
http://www.prep4usmle.com/community/topic11993.ht...

For study plan. I think nobody else can make it for you, for only you know what kind of plan will work out best for you. U would know best ur areas of strenght and weaknesses, estimated time needed to study, ur style of studying and so on. You may find visiting the exam forum on this prep4usmle site helpful in understanding USMLE STEP1 . Also many nice people have written about their problems and how they dealt with them. All this not only helps in problem solving but also eliminates the feeling of isolation and lonliness one may be likely to suffer from when studying for a tough exam cooped up in a room away from the real world. When we are not familiar with something we tend to make it bigger than it really is. So getting to know the exam style and pattern may help you better equip for the USMLE.

For feeling scared and otherwise overwhelmed:
I am telling you what has helped me enormously, may be you can find these helpful too, or can find other means to do that.
I think the most important thing is our attitude and mind set. As they say: "You can, if you think you can." So it is very important not to let these feelings and thoughts make you discouraged and overwhelmed.
Also I personally find prayers to be a big big help in boosting my morale and also in formulating a better strategy to deal more effectively with exam prep. In asking God to help me show the right way and the strength to walk that way I feel I am getting a very strong support network which hold me , sustains me and guides me.
Once you would become more familiar with the exam and the books as you move along on your studies. And things will start falling in place. I am saying this because I know. I started only a weeks ago, and I am an old old graduate, and when I started off I felt so overwhelmed, and so much like alice in wonderland, but just keeping up with my schedule and keeping in touch with this supportive forum helped me so much.
Good luck
Laila
