A 55 year old male is diagnosed with a non-small cell lung cancer and is given a chemotherapy regimen with multiple drugs. He has an initial response to the chemotherapy, with a decrease in size of the tumor. However, a year later the mass is increasing in size, and mediastinal lymph nodes appear enlarged on chest CT scan. A different chemotherapy regimen is employed, but has no effect. Which of the following mechanisms best explains these events:

A) A sarcoma has arisen from the neoplastic cells
B) The neoplastic cells have become well-differentiated
C) P-glycoprotein levels have become elevated in the neoplastic cells
